Quantification and Variation of Microclimatic Variables Within Tree Canopies - Considerations for Epiphyte Research

نویسندگان

چکیده

Forest canopies are incredibly complex self-maintaining biological structures. Conditions above and within the canopy can differ vastly, often resulting in a vertical gradient of microclimate conditions. Canopy epiphytic plants have to deal with climatic variability on much more variable scales compared many other plant groups. The difficulty sensor installation their high cost explain why it has been ignored studies epiphytes. Direct measurements microenvironmental conditions only accurate way assess specific intra-canopy environmental conditions, as there is also still lack methodologically financially viable alternatives allow collection this type data. This study aims make recommendations for direct use epiphyte research summarize key discussion points concerning number placement sensors required different types studies. In addition, we presented high-resolution field data from United Kingdom, where employed over 56 sensors, demonstrate spatial temporal radiation, temperature, relative humidity (RH) tree canopy. Our demonstrated that height leaf-set were most important factors determining For first time, made regarding specifically require forest canopies.

Microclimatic Variation Within Sleeve Cages Used in Ecological Studies

Sleeve cages for enclosing or excluding arthropods are essential components of field studies evaluating trophic interactions. Microclimatic variation in sleeve cages was evaluated to characterize its potential effects on subsequent long-term experiments. Two sleeve cage materials, polyester and nylon, and two cage sizes, 400 and 6000 cm(2), were tested on eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis (L.) ...

Four Years of Epiphyte Colonization in Douglas-fir Forest Canopies

In 1995, we installed surface-sterilized, rough-barked and smooth-barked tree branches in clearcuts, young forests, and old growth. Half of the experimental branches were inoculated with propagules of the epiphytic cyanolichen, Lobaria oregana. In 1997, we concluded that L. oregana was associated with old-growth Douglas-fir forests because of dispersal limitation; addition of L. oregana propagu...

Momentum Transfer within Canopies

To understand the basic characteristics of the observed S-shaped wind profile and the exponential flux profile within forest canopies, three hypotheses are postulated. The relationship between these fundamental profiles is well established by combining the postulated hypotheses with momentum equations. Robust agreements between theoretical predictions and observations indicate that the nature o...

Exceptional Epiphyte Diversity on a Single Tree

An exhaustive survey of vascular epiphytes on a single mature canopy tree in a Costa Rican tropical premontane wet forest revealed an extraordinary level of epiphyte diversity. A total of 126 morphospecies representing at least 52 genera and 21 plant families were found growing epiphytically on the phorophyte (host tree), accounting for more than 1% of the entire vascular flora of Costa Rica. T...
